Hard drive settings?

Postby Fast96 on Fri Sep 18, 2009 11:36 pm

Any suggestions for saving some power, and extending the life of my server drives?
I have a Hitachi Deskstar and a WD Blue SATAII setup in my PC based WHS.
Can I use the windows settings to shut them off after 15 or 30 minutes of inactivity?
The drives are setup as AHCI controlled, and I have done the initial backups already.
The server is in the basement, in a fire safe location (reasonably).
I just want to make sure I don't mess the system up AGAIN. LOL

Why not use Lights Out to shut down the PC when not actively in use - http://www.home-server-blog.de/add-ins/ ... htsout/#en , that should prolong the life of all components.
