I guess I must be part of a very small minority. Judging by the small number of posts, no one seems to be particularly concerned about recovering the system partition of a WHS. I find this to be very strange. In the corporate world, being able to quickly & reliably backup & restore servers is considered essential. Why not for WHS? It is a server after all.
I should clarify what I'm getting at. I do have a Server Recovery disk from my vendor, Acer. I do not consider it to be even remotely adequate. It can only get me back to the state the server was in when it was first installed. That is not what I would consider easy.
Instead of being able to get my server back up & fully functional in 20 minutes, I would have to spend most of an hour just installing the OS, then another 30 minutes configuring the system, then at least an hour downloading & installing patches & updates, then more time installing and configuring Add-ins. Oh, and don't forget about all the reboots that would be required.
Does anyone else find this a little crazy?
What I want is to be able to restore the server to the state it was in when I last backed it up, which I would do daily. This pretty much requires imaging software. The built-in WHS backup does not appear to be able to do this. And I have not found a post anywhere that outlines a good strategy.
If I'm missing something obvious, please enlighten me. Barring that, can anyone point me to a post that does outline a good strategy? Do you have a strategy you can outline here? If not, I guess I'll have to prepare one myself, which is fine; I was just hoping not to re-invent the wheel if it's not necessary.
thanks for taking the time to read this post.
