Centralized Scanning

Postby arbadacarba on Tue Oct 28, 2008 4:07 pm

I have my server set up in a little custom cabinet that holds all my network equipment, modem, router, UPS, etc. On top is my Multifunction Printer which is hooked up to the WHS and shared out to my network of laptops.

After months of disconnecting the MFP from the WHS and plugging it directly into my laptop to scan something I finally got smart.

I installed the scanner driver on the WHS, and a copy of IrfanView to handle the front end. Then added IrfanView to the "Program Launcher" add-in.

Now if I need to scan, I can do it from the console.

Scanning through Remote Desktop Connection was for me.

I turned on the WIA services on the WHS and installed drivers for my MFP, both for printing and scanning.

Then login to the server with Remote Desktop Connection click on the icon I set up for the scanner and the WIA walks through the image aquisition which I save to a shared Scan folder as a jpg.

Too bad I or someone else have not figured out how to do this remote scan on a WHS shared device from the connected remote PC, huh?

Just get a wifi or LAN connected MFP and go direct without having to go through WHS except as the scanned image store?
