Hi

I have been using Linux as home server for many years for my files, but have now replaced it with a simpler solution ...Windows Home Server.

I have reused my old Linux server and added support for more drives.

Hardware:

An old Antech miditower kabinet
AMD Sempron 2800+ CPU
AsRock Mainboard
1 GB RAM
2 x 250 GB SATA disks
Promise 300 - 4 port SATA controller
2 x 1000 GB SATA disks
Cheiftech 3x 5 1/4" hotswap bay with room for 4 SATA disks

Software:

Windows Home Server

I find my new solutions more fleksible and even my wife can access her files trough the internet....its far more easier to have it webbased than a FTP server.

Why did i choose WHS?

1. Its fleksible and i like the Drive Extender and folder duplication funktionality

2. Files can be accessed trough https and is webbased

3. Every PC in the house is now backed up...even if data is locally stored.

4. My linux box was a security problem because updates only exists for a short period....my old Fedora Core was no longer getting security fixes...sure i could upgrade to a newer release, but my experience with linux is that there is a big risk that something would go wrong and render my server useless until i reinstall the entire OS.

5. The license is cheap, its far more cheaper than a full blown Windows Server 2008 and perfect for my needs.

I like the idea that my whole network is Windows based at home....no need for linux commands when i am at home....its enough to have linux boxes as servers at my work as IT-manager ;-)

Just like me, i used to have FreeNAS as file server but as you know WHS is more efficient when we talk about backing up our machines to a secure place (WHS), i got tired of being using CLI and suck tools under Linux - UNIX systems at work and home.

regarding freenas and other open source nas software

Postby pvnilsson on Sat Jun 07, 2008 7:12 pm

I have tried serveral open source nas software like freenas and i´m not impressed.

Think that i will have a Windows Server for years.

One of the best features are the backup of all my PC´s at home, i have 2 children me and my wife and 2 laptops, thats 6 machines and they are now backed up on a regular basis.
