Off-site Backups

Postby jamepc on Sun Mar 22, 2009 2:48 am

I've read a few reviews about Jungle Disk, KeepVault, Mozy, etc of off site backup for WHS. What would be the general opinion be here on these (or other) providers? Pro and cons perhaps.

Thanks!

iDrive

I've just set my WHS up to use iDrive for the following reasons:
it's free up to 2 Gb - enough for the vital stuff I needed to ship offsite
Maintains last 30 versions of backed up data
Handles network shares - very few do and necessary to get at data properly
Works on a backup schedule & continous backup - where it will backup every 10 mins anythinmg that has changed in teh backup set as long as the file is < 50Mb
Has a 'logged off' mode, i.e. works as a service and dooesn't need a logged in user - again not all the options do this
Upload speed is reportedly as good if not better than the rest. I can't comment as I'm on a 512k link and so only 256k up.

My only issue was setting up the 'logged off' working. Worked fine interactively but strange 'can't find backup set' error when used in logged off mode. Eventually I removed the job and recreated and it now works - maybe I typed the login credentials wrong or something originally.

So, in summary my requirement was to have a secure copy of my Onenote files that I use to hold all my scanned in docs, bills etc. For FREE I now have them backed up offsite overnight & can get at numerous back versions in case of corruption. In addition the files are backed up every 10 mins for those that change regularly.
For my usage it's a really good option as this vital data is < 500 Mb for years of bills, receipts etc. Can't really comment on its cost effectiveness for 100s GBs of all data
