What components make up your Windows Home Server.

My WHServer v2.0

Postby DSSystems on Sun Dec 23, 2007 4:24 am

Finally finished building my WHS this week, after starting two weks ago, had MAJOR problems with the Install DVD. [Bad Media]

Anyway heres the story so far.
Hardware:
CPU: AMD Athlon64 3000+
Mobo: ASUS A8V-VM
RAM: 1024mb Samsung DDR
NIC: NetGear GA311
PSU: Antec Truepower 350w
Case: Dell Dimension V450 Desktop
D-Bay: Icy Dock 3 Bay SATA [MB235SPF]
HDD: 1 x 500 GB Seagate IDE
2 x 500 GB Seagate SATA

Software:
OS: Windows Home Server RTM
Add-Ins: Whilst Website Management
Remote Notification
WebGuide 4
Other: Windows 2003 Resource Kit
Virtual Server 2005 R2 [Administration Web site]
WMP11 + 3ivx MPEG-4 codecs
Filezilla FTP Server
uTorrent + WebUI [no add-in]
Still looking for a good, easy to use mail server.

I used the complete 'Dell Dimension V450 Desktop' as my WHS till my RC install died. Only had to up the RAM to 512mb and replace the HDD with an 80 GB one.

Thats a nice clean interface, very 'better half friendly'

I've got a couple of questions if you don't mind.
Will it work with the xxx.homeserver.com domain or do you need your own personal domain ?

And the killer question, can or will it sync up with Outlook ?

i can get to by going to xxx.homeserver.com/email.

There is an addon for outlook sync, but i think its crap. You can configure outlook to use imap though.

I was think more along the lines of can I send and receive mail via name@xxx.homeserver.com
But the more i think about the less likely it would be. :)

Nope, microsoft control these sub-domains and it's unlikely they will forward the MX records to you pc too.

Just buy a domain and point the MX records at your server.

Yeah, thats kind of what I thought they'd do.

Buying the domain isn't a problem, its getting a name thats still available, easy to use and the whole family is happy with. :?
