Must I reinstall WHS?

Postby vipia on Tue Sep 15, 2009 10:11 pm

Hi,
I'm having trouble with reinstalling the Connector.

I have applied the following tests, which are provided in the
Troubleshooting Windows Home Server Connector Installation guide and they all give the required output.
The result is the same on two machines (one XP and one Vista) I'm trying to get re-connected to the server.

http://<YourServerName
http://<YourServerName>:55000/enrollid/id.xml
https://<YourServerName>:56000/enroll/id.xml
http://<YourServerName>:55000/enrollid/id.aspx

But my attempts to reinstall the connector always fail right after I enter the password. (I can log in with Remote Desktop Connection so the password is good) Also, server discovery only works if I select the Manual option - the server name appears automatically, I do not need to enter it.
However, the guide continues with:
"If the problem continues, you can reinstall Windows Home Server. To learn more about reinstalling Windows Home Server, search for "reinstall" in Windows Home Server Help."

My two questions are:
1. Does this mean that I have exhausted all other tests and repair possibilities, and my only option now is to reinstall the server software?
2. As this is the second time I'll have to reinstall in a period of 2 weeks, I wonder what may happening to cause these failures.

Thanks,

Can you bring up the shares in the WHS Connector on the client?

Have you tried to run the Windows Home Server Tookit?

http://mswhs.com/2007/11/13/windows-hom ... er-manual/

What errors does it report?

On the client machine, is it set as DHCP or with a static address?

When you ping the server from the client, what response do you get?

(ping myservername)

Hi Orlandotek,

Thank you for your response. I must apologize for the delay in responding to you, I've been struggling with other issues....I won't bore you with that stuff.

I had been struggling with the Connector problem for a while and by the time I got round to posting my question I was about to deep-six the box. I didn't seem to be getting a response to my question from this or another forum for a few days so I just went ahead and reinstalled the server software.

That fixed the problem I had with the Connector on both machines. I concluded that because I was getting the same problem with two clients that the issue must have been on the server side.

Anyway, FYI the system has been working with 5 clients for a couple of weeks and then started to report that the McAfee protection was not updating. I managed to get a response from McAfee Tech support and was told to remove and reinstall the McAfee Total Protection Service. So, in the month or so I've had the box, I've had to reinstall the server twice and I'm now about to reinstall the Protection Service. It seems to me that this product is not yet ready for "Prime Time"
Do you have any comments?

Thanks,
