Building a Server - Dual or Quad Core?

Building a Server - Dual or Quad Core?

Postby sshapiro63 on Thu Jun 04, 2009 11:13 pm

Hello All,

I have replaced a couple of desktop systems with laptops. I want to use one of the systems as a Windows Home Server. The dual-core is an Intel E7200 system and the quad-core is an Intel Q6600. Is there any reason to use the quad-core instead of the dual-core? The quad generates a lot more heat and I would prefer to use th dual-core if there won't be any major performance impact.

I plan to use it for file sharing and backups to start but want to have expandability if needed for additional features once I learn more about the product.

Thanks,

Steve

From my experience WHS is not very processor intensive, and if it was the dual core would still work fine. So go with the dual core and save yourself some power consumption. As for the dual core Pc it would probably make a great MediaCenter or Gaming Pc.

My WHS has a single core CPU with 512Kb of RAM and whilst not speedy, it does all I need it do without complaint. So if you want to keep heat and power usage doen, use the dual core.

The dual core will be ample, you will find WHS is more memory intensive rather cpu intensive.

The commerical offerings of WHS are using Atom and Celeron processors with 1 to 2 GB of memory, a dual core is more than adaquate. Maximum performance will be achieved through Network and HD with current drivers.
